Ortho4XP 1.3 (And A Preview Of Albert Witted Gateway Edition)

This morning I downloaded and for the first time used the new Ortho4XP 1.3 (download links are in Oscar Pilote’s signature line here). It has several improvements over version 1.2, one of which is smoothing that allows you to have sloped (and not flattened)) airport runways. I watched this YouTube video on how to use it, and the steps there worked perfectly. Also, as he does in the video, I went the extra step in creating mesh and overlays from the HD Mesh 4 package, and downloaded zoom level 19 tiles for several of the airports in the tile.

The results are great, and I’ve attached some screen captures below. Note the nicely sloped runway and airport environment in the last shot. (And you can click any of these images to see larger versions.)

My settings here:

  • ZL 16 as the base zoom level using Bing maps (set in the settings)
  • ZL 18 within three kilometers of each airport using Bing maps (set in the settings)
  • ZL 19 over each airport itself using Google maps (set in with the zoom level screen)
  • Water masks of 300 yards (which is probably too far given how the ortho imagery works in this area)
  • Mesh from HD Mesh 4
  • Overlays from HD Mesh 4

, I’m nearly done with my new Gateway version of Albert Whitted / KSPG. You can see that here, too, in the first several images. Overall, I think the result is fantastic, and I look forward to building a bunch of new tiles.

  1. ..so for every airport and its vacancy you need to go through this process, sound like a tedious time consuming process, or there is a way to per-define and let the app do the job …

    1. Depends on what you want to do. If you want to use the default mesh just pick your tiles, use batch mode, and go. I want to have ZL 19 right on top of specific airports so I select those regions manually, and I want to benefit from the HD mesh and not the default. But that’s just me. It’s very easy to select one, or five, or 20 tiles in Ortho4X, start a batch build, go to sleep, and wake up with them ready in the morning.

      1. There is a slight misconception about mesh (induced by the video you followed). I have just added a comment there to correct it. You are not using the mesh of HD Mesh Scenery v4 (and you can’t), you are using the mesh Ortho4XP builds for you. Now that doesn’t imply it is going to be worse or coarser than the mesh of HD Mesh Scenery v4, just compare by yourself by flying both sceneries if in doubt.

        1. Oscar, first THANK YOU for your remarkable contribution to the hobby. I do have a question: if I extract the mesh raw file from the HD .dsf and list it as a custom mesh file, won’t that burn the tile with the HD mesh? Otherwise what’s the point of having a field in 1.3 for a custom mesh file location?

  2. I just followed the steps from your link regarding contour runways, the new version of Ortho4xp and Alpilotx mesh4 but still do not see a contour runway (and I have it checked in preferences) at KTPF. Any ideas?
