What the BFG has done is remarkable, and more than anything, this site has rekindled my interest in not only sim flying, but also in finishing up my PPL.

At present, I have a new, purpose-built CyberPowerPC on order, one 50″ LED and 2×32″ LED screens, a single 22″ monitor, a trio of floor mounts, an Obutto Ozone cockpit (from an earlier race car pit – more on this later), a Saitek yoke and TPM set, a CH set of pedals, and miscellaneous other flight-specific apps and accessories.

With my current hardware, I could assemble a pretty decent flight sim, using the 50″ screen as the front view, and each 32″ LED as the side window views and the 22″ monitor for Air Manager instruments.

I’m still intrigued by adding an ultra-short-throw front projector to the 2×32″ LEDs, similar to what BFG has detailed here. This would be an additional $2,000 or so in outlay, including the projector, screen and misc hardware to build the cockpit. I could then “retire” my new 50″ Sharp LED to our living room, to relieve an outstanding, but very tired Panasonic 42″ plasma 1080p screen. A very attractive option.

However, I remain interested in auto racing simming, and this is where the alternative of adding another 2×50″ LED to my setup, thereby establishing a 180 degree field of view (employing X-Plane 11’s ability to output to three discrete monitors), much the same as Russ Barlow (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjdgOBJ5xkQ) and Michael Brown (https://youtu.be/MFIhs9l7u7o?t=106) discuss.

I have a Fanatec CSR racing wheel and pedal set with the associated shifter from my days of using the Obutto as a racing sim.

Building a replica Cessna cockpit will pretty much hard wire me into an aircraft sim experience, no? I’d like the option of employing a 180 degree field of view for auto racing simming,  like iRacing or Assetto Corsa (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqMEqX6DYPs)…

So, those of you running the 90 degree side window views with Cessna-like cabins (like BFG does), how difficult is it to break it down, to allow for switching from air to road sims?

    Thoughts?

    Thanks, Dennis
